Ecosia AI Search Adds Mistral 4, Web Source Mode & AI-Free Search

Ecosia has updated its AI Search experience with a new combination of AI models, live-web retrieval and user controls that could have direct implications for search visibility.

According to Ecosia’s updated documentation, AI Chat now runs on Mistral Small 4, while AI Overviews use Mistral Small 3.2. The search engine is also introducing different ways to control how AI answers are generated — including the option to disable AI features entirely.

Web Source Mode brings live web retrieval to AI Chat

One of the most relevant additions for SEO is Web Source Mode.

When enabled, Ecosia AI Chat uses live web sources to generate its answers. This creates another discovery layer beyond conventional rankings, where publishers can potentially gain visibility by being selected as sources for AI-generated responses.

AI Overviews can surface source links

Ecosia’s AI Overviews appear above traditional search results and can display links to the sources supporting the generated response.

For publishers, visibility therefore increasingly includes two separate opportunities: ranking in the conventional results and being selected as a source within the AI-generated layer.

Search can automatically route users into AI Chat

Ecosia also documents auto-routing from traditional search results into AI Chat.

Depending on the query, the search journey can therefore move from a conventional SERP into a conversational interface without the user explicitly starting an AI conversation.

AI Chat also includes Guided Learning and Think Longer modes, providing different ways to generate and explore answers.

Ecosia also offers AI-free Search

Interestingly, Ecosia is not forcing users into an AI-only search experience.

Its AI-free option disables AI Overviews, AI Chat and automatic routing into AI Chat, allowing users to retain a traditional search experience without generative AI features.

Why this matters for SEO

Ecosia is effectively creating several search surfaces inside the same engine: traditional organic results, AI Overviews and conversational answers backed by live web retrieval.

For SEO, this reinforces an increasingly important distinction: visibility is no longer determined only by where a page ranks.

Being discovered, selected and linked as a source by the AI layer is becoming another part of search visibility.
